Six White Chairs

Year of Production

2003

For their second commission at The Wapping Project, Protein worked with the old machinery of the old Hydraulic Power Station. The location suggested the set of a magic act, with the magician and his assistant creating the illusions of body parts appearing and disappearing inside and around the machines. At each repetition, both the magic acts and the relationship between the two performers surprise the audience with unfortunate, embarrassing mistakes and misunderstandings.

The commission stated that a white chair from the restaurant had to be incorporated in the dance; in fact one of the disappearing acts involved a white chair quickly appearing and disappearing behind one of the machines.

Reviews

“They shoehorned in the chair with a cursory flourish half way through, but no one seemed to mind; it was a truly one off show for a restaurant full of fortunate spectators”
