As part of the research and development period of Border Tales, Protein’s sell-out hit of 2013, Luca Silvestrini spent time with refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in the UK and abroad.
Inspired by his experiences talking and giving workshops with them, Luca decided to offer learners at Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants the opportunity to create a new dance theatre work with his company.
Over three weeks at The Place, the participants have embarked on a creative process with Protein to develop and perform There and Here to an invited audience.
Reviews
"Before I felt like a bird in a small, dark room needing space. Now I feel like someone who receives a great light in a huge space facing the sea." Participant feedback
"I joined this project after seeing ‘Border Tales’. I watched it online, but it wasn’t as good as seeing it live. So, I want to appreciate each moment. Then you can feel the taste of dance. The present is the best place and time you can feel NOW!" Participant feedback
"I am very happy that I joined this project. For me it is a great way to exercise – dancing to music, and speaking English. Everyday I get a good lunch and a great shower. I go home and feel great! It makes me very, very happy." Participant feedback

More About The Show
This has been an incredibly insightful and rewarding journey and we wish to thank all the participants (those performing tonight and those who attended only a few sessions) for opening up and for giving all they could to try and discover something different. A great transformation has happened over the last three weeks and we hope that this level of confidence and joy will continue to assist them in their lives.
Luca Silvestrini
Throughout the development and delivery of the dance project, we have developed such a great mutually supportive relationship with Protein; their understanding of how to work best with those most in need has been so valuable to a project like ours. The benefits are both immediate and long lasting to all the wonderful people who have participated. Dance is such an amazing medium for our clients and I look forward to planning and working on the next project.
