But I Am premieres at Woolwich Works!

Protein’s new film with young people from Newhaven School, Greenwich based alternative provision school, had its red carpet premiere on 13 December at Woolwich Works.

An enthusiastic crowd made of school staff, families, artists, promoters, Council leaders and Dominic Mbang, Mayor of Greenwich, were moved and inspired by But I Am, a new film created with and by students from Newhaven School with members of staff and Protein’s dance artists, Emily Thompson-Smith and Temitope Ajose-Cutting.

Part of our inclusion programme, Real Life Real Dance, the film was made during a three week intensive project earlier in November. It was shot inside Woolwich Works and in several outdoor locations in the Royal Arsenal Riverside.

Supported by Royal Borough of Greenwich, Arts Council of England, Berkeley Homes and Woolwich Works, the film was created in collaboration with filmmaker Alice Underwood and features original music by Andy Pink.

This is Protein’s sixth performance project with Newhaven School, a long term and robust partnership that has supported the development of disengaged young people excluded from mainstream education since 2015.

A massive well done to the young performers for all they have achieved, and to everyone involved for supporting the making of such a transformative and inspirational project.
